Foto: Gioele Fazzeri / unsplash.com / CO0 E Depression is one of the most widespread diseases in Germany - and unfortunately also one of the most underestimated. As the German Depression Aid Foundation explains, about twice as many people died by suicide in 2015 than by drugs, traffic accidents and HIV combined. Inadequately treated depression was probably partly responsible for the majority of suicides. That's why successful treatment also plays a critical role in combating suicide. Usually, depression is combated with two approaches: first, psychotherapy and second, the administration of antidepressants. The drugs are designed to regulate the imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain and thus help sufferers. Unfortunately, about one third of patients do not respond to conventional antidepressants. That's why doctors are looking for new ways to help sufferers. And so a third approach could possibly be added: treatment with an antibiotic. 38 Issue 02
