Aging ENGLISH Foto: Tim Mossholder / unsplash OLD What everyone wants to become, but nobody wants to be... The desire for youth and eternal life is as old as humanity. Stories about fountains of youth or the philosopher's stone have survived into our high-tech world and are even used in Hollywood blockbusters to lure in audiences. We have made friends with many of the laws of the universe, but not with aging. Many downright fear everything that is connected with the word. And attempts are being made to delay it as long as possible. Aging changes everyone in different ways, and it also changes itself with developments in research and society. So why are we so reluctant to throw our arms in the air like we did during the last business coaching and shout: “Hurray! Change is great!” Is it because we are helplessly exposed to this particular change? Nor does it seem to help to know that everyone, without exception, has to bear this burden at some point. CHRONOLOGICAL AND BIOLOGICAL AGE When you start to feel old and when you are, by definition, old depends on many factors. While the average life expectancy for men is 78 years today, it was 65.8 years in 1957. 46 CHECK BERLIN/BRANDENBURG #6

Aging Meanwhile, people between 60 and 75 are considered to be older, between 75 and 90 as old and between 90 and 100 as very old. These are the facts. But what about how you feel? I'm still a long way from being 60, but the moment when I felt old for the first time was quite a while ago. And slowly this feeling settles in, because suddenly everyone is younger: the colleagues, the bank teller, the teacher of my godchildren. Science therefore uses the terms chronological and biological age. The chronological age describes the age in years of life, as it shows in your passport. The biological age describes the actual physical condition and is calculated by determining muscle mass, oxygen absorption capacity, body fat percentage and bone density. Here a well-trained, healthy 50-year-old can easily overshadow an untrained 30-year-old with various vices. So all is not lost. WHAT HAPPENS TO US AS WE AGE Our physical and mental performance decreases, our metabolism slows down, we become more susceptible to illnesses and malfunctions occur. And all parts of the body are affected. Every machine has a specific lifespan and our body is one of the most complex mechanisms on this planet, so it is no exception. How quickly you age is genetically predisposed and is steered in one direction or the other by external influences such as lifestyle or illnesses. But the harrowing truth is that by the age of 25, things start to go downhill in some areas. In the 30s, however, many bodily functions are still at their peak, which is why we usually only notice changes in our 40s. Many at this age have probably already had similar experiences as I did: the neon writing above the club entrance is suddenly a bit blurry (and you’re still sober!), the club night knocks me out for the rest of the weekend, and when I get up I groan when no one's looking.Aging is part of our nature and people often love to control nature. So let's see how you can make the individual stages of aging a little easier. The 45s THE FIRST AILMENTS WEIGHT The most noticeable trait when one is over 40 is a gradual weight gain. The body needs fewer calories because the basic as well as the performance metabolism decreases. At the same time, so does the desire for healthy food. In addition, the muscle mass will decrease by 1–2% annually from now on, at the same time the storage of fat and connective tissue increases. This slowly leads to a negative distribution of body mass. The muscles react more and more slowly to training stimuli, so sporting activities should be adapted to the new situation and it is suddenly much more difficult to get rid of those naughty calorieheavy sins compared to a few years ago. Caution: An increased weight reduces the ability to move and promotes metabolic diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes. EYESIGHT For many people, their eyesight also deteriorates somewhat during this phase of life. From birth, substances are deposited in the lens of the eye that can cloud it. In addition, the elasticity of the lens decreases and the eye adjusts more and more slowly to different distances. WRINKLES The first deeper wrinkles appear as the cell metabolism slows down and moisture can be stored more poorly. As the largest organ, our skin is the first to be affected by aging processes, as it is exposed to sunlight, dry room air and pollutants on a daily basis. It loses elasticity and strength. Age spots appear and negative factors such as smoking or not enough sleep are reflected in a pale complexion. TESTOSTERONE In men, the levels of testosterone are now continuously falling and the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke increases sharply.
