ENGLISH Health OPEN YOUR EYES! We look after each part of our body, but very often forget to care for our eyes. Ophthalmologist and eye care expert, Dr. Lubos Frano, explains to us what we should consider when it comes to eye health. If you look at ophthalmology over the past 10-20 years, what has changed and why is it more important now than ever? The eye is a very small but interdisciplinary organ: it is where skin meets vessels and nerve tracts. Therefore, neurological diseases can also be diagnosed in the eye. About 15 years ago you could feel a change in this field. Before that, you would only go to the ophthalmologist to get a prescription for glasses. Then ophthalmology made a huge leap forward - comparable to analogue to digital. The technologies have become much better, as have the treatment options such as lasers. They can now not only treat nearsightedness and farsightedness, but also the retina or perform laser examinations and scans. You can actually speak of a technological revolution in ophthalmology. Nowadays our eyes are used more than they used to be. We spend a lot of time looking at the screen, privately as well as professionally. What does that do to our eyes? We have known for a long time that we have Dr. Lubos Frano of the Augenkraft Institute for Good Vision to protect eyes from UV rays (UV-A + UV-B). Then came the first computer screens, flickering strongly and emitting blue light, which is harmful to the retina. The screens may have improved technologically, but we still get 80 percent of the information through the eyes, which of course means more stress on the eye. The so-called eye office syndrome* also arose as a result of digitalization and the increase in stress on the eye. So why is it important to see an ophthalmologist? Thanks to today‘s technology, you can visualize the vessels through the eyes with a scan within a few seconds. That is why patients with diabetes and cardiac arrhythmias after a stroke are referred to an ophthalmologist. You can use the laser scan in the eye to detect diseases beforehand. What can you do for healthy eyes? The eye is a vascular organ and we have to protect our vessels, otherwise calcification will occur at some point. The vessels can be well-supplied with a so-called Mediterranean diet: olive oil, grain, fresh or dried fruit and vegetables, moderate amounts of fish, dairy pro- ducts and meat as well as lots of herbs and spices. Vegetarians and vegans can replace the important omega-3 and -6 fatty acids found in fish with algae oil preparations or other dishes. Here, you can do research on the Internet or ask a professional nutritionist. Personally, I am a fan of potent antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, magnesium, and Q10, and I recommend healthy eating and some nutritional supplements. Please tell us a little more about your label „Augenkraft“. Patients keep asking me: “How do I take care of my eyes with contact lenses?” Or “What do I do if my eyes are irritated?” I had an idea of what should be in eye drops, but couldn‘t find anything on the market. So I had to develop something myself, and that‘s how I came to start „Augenkraft“ in 2006. Now cosmetic companies are also coming to me because the eye is a skin-like organ and is affected by skin diseases such as psoriasis, neurodermatitis, acne or eczema. Many patients do not like drops, so we have now also developed an eye spray that is sprayed onto the closed lid. We have small glands between the eyelashes that produce the tear film. With the spray, you support a healthy tear production from above, so to speak. In Beijing, I got to know the *Office eye syndrome (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) “Dry Eye Bars”, where they offer eye masks, eye baths and complete wellness treatments just for the eyes. I was so excited about it that I developed new products for Augenkraft. We will soon be launching an eye care product with CBD (cannabidiol), especially for patients and customers with dry and sensitive skin, which is also suitable for all skin types. Do you also offer simple check-ups? Yes, for example the one for men 40 plus: This includes checking visual acuity, measuring intraocular pressure and examining the retina. The patient also receives the documents. Augenkraft Institute for Good Vision Innsbrucker Strasse 58 10825 Berlin www.augenkraft.com Interview: Ernesto Klews When working with the computer, we fixate the screen with great concentration. As a result, natural reflexes such as blinking are suppressed. Regular blinking is essential for the build-up of the tear film in order to prevent evaporation or wearing off the tear film from the eye and thus the development of dry eyes. You should take regular breaks from the screen. Opticians now offer glasses with UV protection, which can also protect the eyes when working with the computer. 74 CHECK | AUSGABE 2 CHECK | AUSGABE 2 75
